Police say a woman on foot near downtown Lawrence early Friday morning was attacked from behind by a man who grabbed her and covered her mouth.

The incident happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Vermont Street, the Lawrence Police Department said in a tweet Friday morning. The location is a block off Massachusetts Street, and just south of South Park.

The victim was able to scream, and the suspect ran away, police said.

Police did not find the man. They said he was described as a white male, in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall with brown hair. A clothing description was not provided.

“Please be aware of this incident, always be aware of your surroundings and, when possible, walk with friends when out at night,” police said in the tweet.
