Teen hurt when dirt bike collides with SUV in Douglas County

A 15-year-old boy was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital after the dirt bike he was driving collided with an SUV just south of Lawrence.

The crash happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of East 1000 Road, or County Road 458, and involved the dirt bike and a Buick Enclave, said Sgt. Kristen Channel of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The Buick, driven by a 41-year-old Johnson County woman, was northbound when it hit the dirt bike, driven by the 15-year-old Douglas County boy, Channel said. She said the dirt bike did not have headlights.

The teen was taken by ground ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital with injuries considered serious, Channel said. She did not have an update on his condition on Friday.

The woman was not injured, Channel said.

The roadway was closed for about five hours while deputies investigated the crash, Channel said. She said the investigation remains open.
