- Knock, knock, knock. Every 15 minutes a young Bob Schumm would rap on the door of a Kansas University fraternity or sorority house. Evening after evening, he would stand on a stoop with his little food cart. Sandwiches, milk, potato chips, hard-boiled eggs for sale. Hard-boiled eggs? “I don’t know that you can make a living selling them now, but you sure could in the late 1960s,” Schumm said.

- It was 2007 and Mike Machell was a novice Lawrence school board candidate. A call from his friend and former Lawrence mayor Shirley Martin-Smith did a good job highlighting the novice part. “She said, ‘who’s on your steering committee?’’ Machell recalls. “I said ,‘Uh, what steering committee?’ She said, ‘how much money have you raised?’ I said, ‘Uh, how much do I need?’’’ Machell fell short of winning a seat on the board, finishing fifth in an eight-person field.

- There were lots of questions. Lawrence city commissioners had just agreed to put two referendums on the November 2008 ballot that would decide the fate of Lawrence’s financially struggling public transit system. Among the cynical, the question was: What are you trying to do, kill the bus system? City Commissioner Mike Dever assured them that wasn’t the case. Among nervous bus fans, the question was: Do we have enough votes to win? Dever assured them that they did.
