- One of the main reasons Vanessa Sanburn, her husband, Jake Lowen, and 6 year old daughter, Nadia, chose to move to Lawrence this summer from Wichita was the Lawrence public school system. “The most compelling reason we had for moving up here to Lawrence was the caliber of … public schools that they had,” Sanburn said. “The schools there weren’t good enough for us.”

- Michael Riley grew up in and around Lawrence and is a product of Lawrence High. He entered the Air Force and came into contact with an organization for which he now works. “I met the Salvation Army when I was in the service,” Riley said. He is now SA’s children’s ministry director in Lawrence.

- Bob Byers began working with children as soon as he graduated with a master’s degree from Kansas University in the late 1970s. He’s worked in several capacities at the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, from investigation child protection cases to helping create a child welfare information system and just about everything in between. But there’s a difference between Byers as a social worker and Byers as a school board candidate.

A sparse crowd showed up Wednesday at Free State High School for the first of five candidate events sponsored by the Douglas County Voter Education Coalition. Although the crowd was a bit light — about 50 people, with many of those being candidates, campaign volunteers or event organizers — those in attendance said they had heavy issues on their minds.
