- The two newly elected members of the Douglas County Commission are downplaying the first Democratic majority of the three-member commission in 18 years. “I really don’t think that the county commission work is partisan work,” said Democrat Nancy Thellman, who will replace Republican Bob Johnson in the 2nd District seat in January.

- Democrat Nancy Thellman and Republican Jim Flory have won the two seats on the Douglas County Commission. In the 2nd District race, Thellman, of rural Lawrence, defeated Republican David L. Brown, a Vinland-area farmer and rancher and retired Douglas County Sheriff’s officer. Flory, a former Douglas County district attorney and lifetime county resident, defeated Democrat Ken Grotewiel, a former Wichita-area legislator who moved to Lawrence about a year ago.

Republican Scott Morgan, a Lawrence school board member, received more campaign contributions through July 24 in the state Senate race against incumbent Democrat Marci Francisco, a former Lawrence mayor.

- Today is the last day to register to be eligible to vote in the Aug. 5 primary election in Kansas. The Douglas County Clerk’s office at the courthouse, 1100 Mass., will be open until 7 p.m. today to accept registration applications for county residents.
