Tune In

Bourdain right on the money about Deen
May 18, 2012
Tonight’s offerings should have some home chefs screaming at the screen. And I’m not just talking about another helping of Gordon Ramsay’s “Kitchen Nightmares” (7 p.m., Fox).
Shows get a half-life
May 17, 2012
On television, as in life, May is a season of renewal. Or cancellation. Or a promise of a half-hearted, tentative renewal that feels a little bit like a death sentence. Ah, May.
Suburbs pose threat to koala
May 16, 2012
An engaging combination of the smart, the poignant and the cute, the “Nature” presentation “Cracking the Koala Code” (7 p.m., PBS, check local listings) should not be missed.
‘Smash’ ends without bang
May 14, 2012
“Smash” (9 p.m.), NBC’s ambitious and highly promoted musical drama, wraps up tonight. It’s taken a whole season to build up the kind of soap-opera froth it should have generated in the early going.
‘Common Law’ follows USA playbook
May 11, 2012
Take the buddy-cop “bromance” genre, add a few too-cute gimmicks and you have “Common Law” (9 p.m., USA).
‘Idol’ praise may doom contestant
May 9, 2012
Where would “American Idol” (7 p.m., Fox) be without platitudes and hyperbole? Last week, Randy Jackson called Joshua Ledet one of the best “Idol” performers ever.
‘Sherlock’ a can’t-miss Sunday series
May 6, 2012
“Sherlock” (8 p.m., PBS) returns for a second season on “Masterpiece Mystery!” A cheeky, cerebral delight, “Sherlock” updates Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective series to the 21st century. Benedict Cumberbatch (“War Horse”) returns in the title role.
Syfy sets sail on ‘Treasure Island’ adaptation
May 5, 2012
Syfy presents a four-hour adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” (7 p.m.). An impressive cast includes Eddie Izzard (as Long John Silver), Elijah Wood and Donald Sutherland. Glimpses of Wood, innumerable special effects and the marathon running time may appeal to fans of the “Lord of the Rings” franchise.
Mommas square off in the kitchen
May 4, 2012
Mother’s Day arrives early as comic Ralph Harris (“On Our Own”) hosts the premiere of “My Momma Throws Down” (8 p.m., TV One). Each episode will pit two matriarchs against each other in a race to create their signature dishes. Contestants will be assisted (or distracted) by family members and judged by a rotating panel of chefs, restaurateurs and celebrities. This celebration of mothers and their recipes was created by the makers of “Iron Chef.”
How will Chelsea handle guest Jennifer Love Hewitt and her new show?
May 3, 2012
While I’ve never been a huge fan of talk show host Chelsea Handler, I’m curious about tonight’s “Chelsea Lately” (10 p.m., E!). The host, also an actress and author, has a good sense of the ridiculous and absolutely no scruples about discussing the intimate, embarrassing and disgusting.
Three cheers for Sue Heck on ‘The Middle’
May 2, 2012
“The Middle” (7 p.m., ABC) tends to get overlooked. And that’s the theme of tonight’s episode. It’s hard to get noticed when a show shares a night with “Modern Family,” the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series that has been singled out for critical love since before it debuted. If the show got any more praise, it would be “Mad Men.”
‘Top Gear’ worships NASCAR
April 30, 2012
“Top Gear” (7:30 p.m., BBC) has always taken a cheeky look at car culture. But it has always offered criticism based on love and devotion.
Ripa rips up TV Land Awards
April 29, 2012
Proof that critical insights can arrive at any time: While I was in a dentist’s chair some months back, enduring a procedure that straddled the line between discomfort and pain, the hygienist left the television on for me. It was tuned to “Live! With Kelly,” a morning show hosted by Kelly Ripa. Fifteen seconds into her banal chitchat, I was praying for the drilling to resume.
Cable TV: All over but the shouting
April 28, 2012
“Flipped Off” 8 p.m. Saturday, A&E) becomes the latest series to celebrate real estate speculation during the worst housing market since the Great Depression.
‘Whale Wars’ moves to N. Atlantic
April 27, 2012
A new season of “Whale Wars” (8 p.m., Animal Planet) moves the action to a different ocean battleground.
