A giant pumpkin head joins the crowd as young and old trick-or-treaters participated in the annual Downtown Lawrence Halloween event Monday, Oct. 31, 2016.

Those in search of the highest concentration of doorsteps ready for trick-or-treaters may want to head to downtown Lawrence.

Downtown’s annual Halloween trick-or-treating event will take place Wednesday evening. Downtown Lawrence Inc. Executive Director Sally Zogry said that almost every business along Massachusetts Street typically hands out candy for the event, amounting to more than 100 participating businesses.

The downtown event often attracts those with elaborate Halloween costumes, both adults and kids, and Zogry said downtown provided a good location for everyone to celebrate the holiday.

“It really is nice to provide this space and place for people of all ages to come and have fun on Halloween,” Zogry said.

Downtown trick-or-treating begins at 5 p.m. and typically goes “until the candy runs out.” Zogry noted that businesses supply their own candy and the end time varies, but the event usually wraps up about 7 or 8 p.m.

Additional events are also happening at the same time. Beginning at 5 p.m., Zogry said the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office would hold a trunk-or-treat event in the parking lot at 11th and Massachusetts streets. Across the street, Watkins Museum of History will be holding a trick-or-treating event and scavenger hunt for prizes from 5 to 9 p.m.
