A rainy weekend in Lawrence could lead into a rainy week.

Between the beginning of thunderstorms on Saturday and 1 p.m. Monday, Lawrence received about 3.99 inches of rain, said Brandon Drake, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Although the area received a large amount of precipitation, the Lawrence area is still well behind its annual average for rain.

On average, Lawrence receives about 32.9 inches of rain by this time of the year. As of Monday morning, Lawrence had received only 21.7 inches for the year, 11.2 inches less than normal, Drake said.

“If you look at it from (the annual) perspective, we are still quite a bit below normal,” he said.

But more rain is on the way. The Lawrence area is expected to see rain off and on Monday and again on Tuesday. There is a 60 percent chance of rain Monday evening, a 90 percent chance of rain Tuesday and an 80 percent chance of rain Tuesday evening.

Drake said most of the thunderstorms would hit north-central Kansas.

“Lawrence will get some out of it, but not the heavy (rain on Monday evening),” he said. “Lawrence may get a pretty decent round again Tuesday night before it all gets out of here.”

The weather will likely dry up on Wednesday, but there is a possibility for more rain in the area Thursday evening, Friday morning and Saturday. Drake said the end-of-the-week weather would depend on how tropical moisture from the south moved into the area later in the week.

“It’s a chance at this point,” he said. “Right now, the devil is in the details for that.”
