From the ashes: 5 years after the Boardwalk Apartment Fire

About 1:20 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2005, emergency dispatchers began receiving 911 calls about a fire at a northwest Lawrence apartment complex. In minutes, a fire at the Boardwalk Apartments ripped through 76 apartments. Three people died in what was one of the worst fires in Lawrence history. Five years later, we take a look back.

A weekend fire at the Lumberyard Arts Center in Baldwin City caused about $50,000 in damage, said Baldwin City Fire Chief Allen Craig Monday morning.

An early Sunday morning fire damaged the Lumberyard Arts Center in Baldwin City, 718 High St. The fire started around 4:30 a.m., and firefighters reported fire showing on the north side of the building.

An electrical panel briefly caught fire at Kansas University’s Haworth Hall about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, but students have been allowed to return to most parts of the building, 1200 Sunnyside Ave., said Joe Monaco, a KU spokesman.
