Bob and Elizabeth Dole began the 2009 Dole Lecture on Sunday afternoon by remembering Jack Kemp, Dole’s 1996 vice presidential running mate, who died Saturday after a battle with cancer. “He was one of those Republicans who wanted to make the party bigger for the right reasons,” Bob Dole said. “He’s just a good guy and a good friend.”

- U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins will speak during a Lawrence Chamber of Commerce lunch at noon May 1 at the Dole Institute of Politics, 2350 Petefish Drive. Jenkins, a Republican from Topeka and former Kansas state treasurer, took office in January for her first House term after she defeated Nancy Boyda in the November election.

- Former U.S. Sens. Bob and Elizabeth Dole are scheduled to deliver the 2009 Dole Lecture sponsored by the Dole Institute of Politics. Bob Dole has given one of the annual lectures before, but Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute, said he has tried to get the two of them to appear at the institute together since Bob Dole’s last speaking engagement there.

- A former solicitor general of the United States is scheduled to visit the Kansas University campus Sunday and Monday. Paul Clement, who served as the nation’s 43rd solicitor general under George W. Bush from 2005 to 2008, argued in the Supreme Court on behalf of the government in 49 cases.

- “Remember the last time Lincoln packed a room?” joked Richard Norton Smith, who returned to Lawrence on Sunday to kick off the Dole Institute of Politics’ Presidential Lecture Series. Smith, the first permanent director of the Dole Institute, returned to Kansas University’s West Campus to participate as an expert on Abraham Lincoln, the nation’s 16th president, and to discuss “Lincoln at 200: The Measure of a President.”
- Dole Institute to study Obama’s first 100 days

- An upcoming study group at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics will evaluate President Barack Obama’s performance throughout his first 100 days in office. The weekly sessions will be led by Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy and Dole Fellow Scott Burnett, who worked in the Carter administration as director of the Presidential Speakers Bureau.
