Letter: Defense expense
April 30, 2013
Attorney General Schmidt asked Senate Ways and Means on Thursday for $1.2 million to defend against anticipated legal challenges to four bills recently passed by the Legislature.
Letter: Arts vision
April 30, 2013
I agree with the World Co.’s recent “Planning vision” editorial that “Setting a broad vision for the future of Lawrence could be a useful part of the long-range planning process.” However, while many aspects of such a vision were alluded to in the editorial, one aspect of Lawrence’s rich cultural heritage that was not mentioned was the town’s thriving arts community.
Letter: Gun ‘rights’
April 29, 2013
We accept that the Second Amendment affirms opposition to foreign, invading forces. But personal guns are hardly required today for national defense or food.
Letter: Election defense
April 26, 2013
Venezuela has a model electoral system, widely praised as one of the fairest and most transparent in the world by organizations such as the Carter Center.
Letter: Learning theory
April 23, 2013
America has numerous problems waiting to be fixed or not to be fixed; some expand internationally.
Letter: Cooker control
April 23, 2013
I feel that our brave Kansas legislators should take their attention off of background checks for guns and focus on a much more pressing and dangerous issue: background checks for pressure cookers.
Letter: Dr. Brownback?
April 23, 2013
It’s clear that our legislators and Gov. Brownback are much better informed than our doctors about women’s reproductive health and how to diagnose, treat and counsel women regarding their needs.
Letter: Getting organized
April 22, 2013
I was so excited about the Big Event day created by Kansas University; I’m sure a lot of people were.
Letter: Earth’s not flat
April 22, 2013
It’s time to accept the science regarding climate change: It’s happening, and humans are the cause.
Letter: Courage lacking
April 20, 2013
The late President of the United States John F. Kennedy wrote a book about courageous Americans who chose to take necessary action because it was the right thing to do rather than the politically expedient thing to do. There were few examples of courage in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday. Maybe Sens. Kirk, Collins, McCain and Toomey would qualify.
Letter: NRA sway?
April 20, 2013
Whatever happened to the will of the people? The U.S. Senate has just defeated the watered-down compromise bill that would have somewhat expanded background checks to gun purchases made at gun shows and via the Internet. This in spite of the fact that over 90 percent of Americans, including a significant majority of National Rifle Association members, support these checks.
Letter: Inhumane act
April 20, 2013
Over the past two centuries, there has been an evolving standard on what constitutes humane punishment for crimes in America. For example, corporal punishments such as public flogging and branding are now considered to be unnecessarily cruel.
Letter: Shame on us
April 20, 2013
Shame on Sens. Roberts and Moran and their cowardly comrades. These elected officials have caved in once again to the disingenuous positions of the National Rifle and Gun Owners associations.
Letter: Arts support
April 18, 2013
To the editor: “Who sows little, harvests little,” Chrétien de Troyes wrote at the outset of one of his Arthurian stories, at the same time that up from the wheat fields of his northern France rose, stone by stone, the towering cathedrals we admire today.
Letter: Grateful for help
April 18, 2013
To the editor: Several students and staff arrived at various times Saturday between 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. I had requested assistance with our yard after receiving their flyer. The leader was Dave, and with a greeting, some minor instructions as to where tools/bottled water were located and the items most needed to be done, he went immediately to work. Soon, three other students and KU staff arrived, ready to do work. When some had to leave, others arrived to take their places.
