Letter: Military icon
May 11, 2013
Since the dawn of the atomic age, the men and women of our strategic nuclear forces have spent countless hours preparing for a war that they prayed would never come. They have served long tours in remote locations far from families and friends. They have risked their lives working with toxic and volatile substances in confined concrete silos. They have battled minus-83-degree cold at Thule and flown countless hours in cramped aircraft.
Letter: Pinckney pride
May 10, 2013
Thank you, Lawrence, for Pinckney mural.
Poor leadership
May 10, 2013
Poor leadership plagues both state and local goverments.
Dandelions
May 10, 2013
Dandelions infest Lawrence yards.
Basketball calls
May 10, 2013
Coach should have the right to challenge official’s calls or lack of call/
Letter: An angry rant
May 9, 2013
Employment still hard to find while Congress debates esoteric issues.
Letter: KU’s loss
May 8, 2013
The Journal-World has recently published both an editorial and an article about Kansas University’s lack of participation in distance education. The irony of the situation is that, up until about a year ago, KU employed one of the country’s leading distance education scholars.
Letter: Not so bad
May 8, 2013
Lawrence must be a terrible place to live.
Letter: Wildlife warning
May 8, 2013
The Journal-World article of Sunday May, 5 entitled “Concert … baby wildlife” encourages the creation of serious public health problems. Rabies is a real and life-threatening problem.
Letter: Missile message
May 4, 2013
I read that the “rocket” in Centennial Park is getting a new coat of paint. Perhaps many Lawrencians don’t know that this actually is the shell of a Polaris missile, a true weapon of mass destruction. The missile was donated to the city in October 1964 by the Lawrence Navy League. It somehow was intended to honor those who served in the U.S. military during the Cold War. In 2011, the Kansas Cosmosphere asked us to donate the missile to them, but the City Commission rejected the request.
Letter: Nurses week
May 4, 2013
Lawrence Memorial Hospital is celebrating National Nurses Week May 6-12. The purpose of National Nurses Week is to raise public awareness of the value of nursing and to help educate the public about the vital roles nurses play in meeting the health care needs of the community and the American people. In honor of the dedication, commitment and tireless effort of the nearly 3.1 million nurses nationwide who promote and maintain the health of this nation, LMH is proud to recognize nurses everywhere during this week for the quality work they provide seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Letter: Communication
May 3, 2013
I am confident that we can agree the community ideals marked by neighbors and friends gathered on the front porch in open agreement and disagreement on all life topics and engaging face-to-face is all but dead. In past Rockwellian times, the coffeehouse became the dominant forum for community debate and the sharing of everyday life events. Sadly, this is changing as well.
Letter: Police view
May 3, 2013
When mass shootings occur, it is the duty of the police officer on the street to respond and deal with the results of the carnage. How do they view the attempts of legislators to pass more gun laws, “assault” weapons bans and smaller magazine capacities?
Letter: Evil deeds
May 3, 2013
Jesus addresses tragedies similar to those in Boston, Texas and Bangladesh in Luke 13:1-5. The issue with the people seemed to be whether those who survived were less sinners than those who perished. Jesus’ response looked beyond this: “Unless you repent you will likewise perish.” Seems pretty harsh given the circumstances, yet that is exactly what he meant and means today.
Letter: Faulty arguments
April 30, 2013
Two writers in Saturday’s Journal-World — in the “Saturday Column” and Marsha Goff in “Your Turn” — expressed their views regarding the proposed new Menards.
