The Free State doubles team of Erik Czapinski/Trey Melvin won both of its matches on Friday to reach the doubles semifinals of the Class 6A state tennis tournament at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

After receiving a first-round bye, Czapinski and Melvin defeated Olathe South’s Lleyton Fosha/Noah Murphy in the second round before upending Garden City’s Daniel Darter/Will Keller in the quarterfinals. The Free State doubles tandem will face Blue Valley Northwest’s Brent Fallon/Alex Downing on Saturday in the semifinals.

The Lawrence High doubles team of Kanak Masten and Cooper Wright and Free State singles player Sawyer Nickel both posted records of 3-1 on Friday to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.

Free State’s Jack Kelsey/Sam Six went 2-2 at the state tournament.

Day 2 of the state tournament will begin at 9:05 a.m. Saturday.
