Letter to the editor: Seconding sidewalks

To the editor:

I and many others fully agree with Mr. Herynk’s letter to the editor on March 23, which stated that our sidewalks are public and residents should not have to pay to repair them. It’s not the homeowner’s responsibility to pay for public sidewalks.

The city is really being unreasonable to require homeowners to pay for something that everyone else uses. Why isn’t it the same as the streets we drive on? I don’t understand why the city can’t reason this out. If they think that the homeowners should pay for the sidewalks that are used by the public, then I want new city commissioners! Next we’ll be asked to fund the repairs in the streets of the city. We’ve been to several cities throughout our lives and no city has as many streets in need of repair as Lawrence. What is the problem? We have some of the highest taxes in the state. I think our streets and sidewalks are as important (if not more important) than the art projects they’re spending our money on!
