Baldwin clinches spot in state championship behind Abby Ogle’s 28 points

EMPORIA — With a spot in the Class 4A-DII state championship game on the line, Abby Ogle went into Baldwin’s semifinal matchup against Hugoton with a very simple mindset for herself.

“Just keep going,” Ogle said.

She did just that.

Ogle never took her foot off the gas in Baldwin’s 60-47 win over Hugoton on Friday, scoring a game-high 28 points at White Auditorium to help the Bulldogs secure a spot in the state championship.

“She came to play tonight,” Baldwin girls basketball coach Bob Martin said of Ogle. “She played like an All-Stater tonight. When she does that, we’re pretty good.”

Ogle got off to a hot start in the first period, scoring nine points and helping Baldwin to an eight-point lead heading into the second. She scored the first five points and led the defensive effort against Hugoton, which shot only 4 of 12 in the first.

“Abby had a great performance; everything kind of went off of her,” Martin said.

Ogle, who finished with a game-high three steals, said she strived to play a smart game defensively.

“(I wanted to) keep my hands off people and not foul,” Ogle said with a laugh. “I usually hack at people, and I just tried not to hack at people. (I kept) pushing it at them, doing what I do.”

As a team, Baldwin held Hugoton to less than 41 percent shooting, including a first half in which the Bulldogs allowed just 12 points.

“We really came out of the gun well. I thought our defense was terrific tonight,” Martin said. “We were able to jump on top of them and maintain it, and we were able to score enough.”

Joining Ogle in double figures were Reilly Stewart (11 points), who made three shots from behind the arc, and Carly Lindenmeyer (10), who added a team-high eight rebounds.

Baldwin controlled the pace and led the entire way after beginning the game on a 5-0 run.

The Bulldogs came away with the victory despite shooting a lower field goal percentage (33 percent) than Hugoton. In addition to Ogle’s performance, Martin also credits his team’s defense. Baldwin forced 20 turnovers in the game, a stat Martin called the key to the game.

“We were able force some (turnovers), and that’s what we tried to do defensively,” Martin said. “But I thought we were just pretty sound defensively, too. We were able to make it difficult for them to score.”

Baldwin (23-1) will now turn its attention to Andale, which will be its opponent in the championship. It will be Baldwin’s seventh time playing in the state championship game, and the first time since 2015.

“It feels so good,” Ogle said about getting back to the title game, her first since her freshman season. “It’s what we’ve been working to all year. We knew we had a shot. We just had to play our game.”

The Bulldogs will be vying for their first title since 1996.

“We’re as excited as we could be,” Martin said with a wide smile.

Tipoff against Andale is scheduled for 4 p.m. at White Auditorium.
