Letter to the editor: Proper policing

To the editor:

On June 7, the Lawrence Journal-World reported that 807 seat-belt tickets were issued by the Lawrence police. Were these issued in accordance with the Lawrence population of males, females, white, black, Indian, Canadian, Mexican, Asian, etc.?

At one of the Lawrence seat-belt stops, the driver allegedly got out with both fists swinging at the police officer and took him to the ground. Fortunately, another officer arrived and shot the alleged attacker. This was a perfect example of proper police action.

It appears that the police do not need additional training but the same cannot be said about the city mayor and commission. They need training in the Constitution and law enforcement. Of course if the seat-belt law was canceled, the mayor’s problem would disappear; just more traffic deaths would occur.
