Lawrence High freshman Amaya Harris prepares to throw the javelin during the USATF Junior Olympics on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Rock Chalk Park.

Lawrence High thrower Amaya Harris, who will be a sophomore in the upcoming school year, claimed runner-up in the girls javelin competition (15-16 age group) at the 2018 USATF Hershey Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.

Harris recorded her best throw on her very first attempt, launching the javelin 37.84 meters to finish over 9 meters behind the winner of the event. Harris qualified for the meet with a second-place finish in early July at the regional meet in Little Rock, Ark.

As a freshman, Harris helped the Lions capture a state championship last spring, finishing sixth in the javelin competition at the 6A state meet in Wichita. In addition, Harris was a member of the 4×100-meter relay, which took first in the event.
