Letter to the editor: Summer of drag

To the editor:

“Drag ain’t a hobby, baby. Drag ain’t a night job. Drag is a protest. Drag is a raised fist inside a sequined glove. Drag is a lot of things, baby, but drag is not for sissies.” This summer the Kansas Repertory Theatre addresses gender identity and LGBTQA themes through “La Cage aux Folles” and “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” two shows focusing on the experience of drag, to offer an evening of humor, song, dance and sociocultural awareness for our community.

As a local drag queen who stands up for diversity, inclusion and acceptance, I take great pride in knowing that I have the support of the Lawrence community through the events I host and promote as Deja Brooks. Deja’s Reading Rainbow, a story hour for all ages at the Lawrence Public Library, is now in its second year with adult story time coming this fall. Transformations Charity Gala is also returning to Liberty Hall for its eighth year, pairing drag queens with those brave enough to compete in drag for local charities, transforming the lives of the Lawrence community through love, culture and awareness.

I would like to thank Peter Zazzali, artistic director, KRT and KU for making this the summer of drag. Drag is an ever-changing art form and deserves its recognition for those who have stepped up and stepped out in the ongoing fight for diversity, inclusion and acceptance. My reason for this letter is to celebrate the cast and crew of both shows for shining bright this summer and to encourage those who are open-minded, or may need some help in opening their minds, to attend a KRT show — not only will you be supporting the arts but maybe you’ll step away feeling a little more fabulous in your own skin!

Brandon Eisman,

Lawrence
