LHS bowling teams sweep home quad

The Lawrence High boys and girls bowling teams couldn’t help but gather around senior Diamonique Vann as she wrapped up her third game of Tuesday’s quadrangular.

Energetic cheers from her teammates would follow whenever Vann rolled her ball down the lane during the final frames at Royal Crest Lanes.

After a dominant outing for much of the day, Vann was closing in on a 700 series and her teammates were itching to see her reach that mark.

Although she would fall just short in the 10th frame, Vann finished her third game with a 276, and ended the day with a 695 three-game series to carry the LHS girls bowling team to a first-place finish.

Lawrence (2,190) finished 33 pins ahead of Shawnee Mission Northwest (2,157).

It was a season-best performance from Vann, who led all individual bowlers.

“I thought I did really good. I wish I had known I was only five pins shy (of 700),” Vann said with a laugh. “Then I would have focused a lot more on my last ball to get that 700. But I was really proud of how I did today.”

Vann continued her dominance, claiming an individual title in four of the five meets this season.

The senior was also joined by teammates Holly Evans and Ashley Dykes in the top five. Evans bowled a 542 series and finished in third, while Dykes bowled a 520 series and finished in fourth.

As for the boys’ team, LHS came away with a commanding first-place finish. The Lions (2,481) finished 119 pins ahead of Shawnee Mission West (2,362).

Individually, Lawrence senior Hunter Krom tied for first place with Shawnee Mission West’s Andrew Fonseca. Krom and Fonseca both rolled a 636 series.

The rest of the top five was rounded out by Lawrence’s Javier Lemmons (606), Ethan Huslig (589) and Jayden Cress (586).

“I’m really proud of my team because that just means that we’re coming together a lot more and helping each other out,” Vann said. “It’s just pushing us further to regionals and state.”

LHS will host its next quad on Feb. 6 against Gardner Edgerton, Olathe East and Olathe Northwest. The meet is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Royal Crest Lanes.
