Seabury tops Heritage Christian, looks for better defense

The scoreboard flashed a 77-50 victory Monday, but Bishop Seabury’s boys basketball players didn’t spend much time celebrating after their walk back to the locker room.

Leading by 20 points early in the second quarter against Heritage Christian at Dillon Gymnasium, the game’s outcome wasn’t in doubt. But their strong defense, which has helped them win five of their last six games, took a “step back” in the eyes of their coach Jonathan Raney.

“We were just way too inconsistent,” Raney said. “It was either we got a turnover or they scored. There was no solid possessions in between. That was the frustrating thing.”

Even without their best defensive effort, the Seahawks (6-6) made the most of their offense. Thomas diZerega, Seabury’s lone senior, finished with 14 points and five assists, slipping passes through defenders.

When the Seahawks forced turnovers, they were always ready to run. Freshmen guards Zach Bloch (10 points, five rebounds, four assists) and Stavian Jones (13 points) set the tone by looking for driving lanes and kicking the ball out to teammates. When they looked for their own shots, they made a combined five 3-pointers.

“Zach is a heck of a player,” Raney said. “He’s not a normal freshman by any means. He can control the pace and is really good at kicking the ball ahead.”

Seabury sophomore Cobe Green scored 10 points in the first half, but had a different look in his eyes after he took an accidental hip check in the third quarter when a defender tried to jump in front of him to steal a pass. Perhaps playing with some anger, he made his next three shots on his way to a game-high 17 points.

Green, a strong slasher when driving downhill, has turned into one of the team’s top scoring options this season. It’s a different role than his older brother, Chris, who is a 6-foot post player. Chris Green, a junior, had eight points and 15 rebounds, jumping over players for loose rebounds.

“When we were younger, I used to play up with him,” said Cobe Green, referring to his brother. “I’d always be one of the little dudes when I’d ball with him. I’ve always been a scorer … and he’d be in there like a clean-up crew.”

During one timeout in the third quarter, Raney told his team to stop worrying about offense. He wanted a better effort on the other side of the court. The Seahawks responded with steals on back-to-back possessions, resulting in layups for sophomore Cobe Green and Bloch.

A minute later, Seabury allowed a 6-0 run by giving up a pair of offensive rebounds. Through the first three quarters, the Eagles were trailing by 25 points but shooting nearly 50 percent.

“You look at our last couple games and our first-shot defense has been really, really good,” Raney said. “But today was definitely a step back as far as that’s concerned.”

With a talented group of guards, Raney wants the Seahawks to create offense through their defense. They used a full-court trapping defense at times in the first half with sophomore Luke Hornberger (seven rebounds, three blocks) protecting the paint.

Seabury will play host to Maur Hill (9-1, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A) at 7:30 p.m. today.

“The good thing is, probably for them, that we don’t have a couple of practices,” Raney said. “We have a chance to go out (today) and take a step forward and play better defensively.”
