LHS boys swimming 3rd at home meet

When Alex Heckman and Stephen Johnson joined the Lawrence High boys swimming team during their freshmen year, they were two of the three freshmen on the entire squad.

During the Lawrence Invitational on Wednesday, they had a chance to celebrate Senior Night with eight other teammates as their class only grew throughout their careers.

In their final home meet — their only home meet this season — Johnson took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Heckman was first in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle. Heckman dropped time in both races, but was “kind of disappointed” with his placing in the 100 freestyle.

The Lions took third in the seven-team meet with 290 points. McPherson won the team title with 401 points and Bishop Miege was second with 306.

“We did better this meet than our last meet probably because it was at home, home crowd, Senior Night,” Lawrence coach Kent McDonald said. “Every year it seems like we do pretty good here, even though got third. I don’t remember getting beat here before, but the two teams who beat us are pretty good.”

Beyond the event winners, Lawrence senior Treyton Trujillo was proud that he earned a state consideration time in the 100 fly. He took sixth in a personal-best 1:00.24, the first time he’s made a time in an individual race where he could qualify for state.

Trujillo started swimming for LHS during his sophomore season after running cross country. McDonald praised him for his work in the offseason to put himself in a position to qualify for state.

“Honestly, I was kind of disappointed that it wasn’t as big of a drop as I wanted,” Trujillo said of his reaction. “But then I realized I got my cut and I was content because this isn’t as fast of a pool. I did probably as best as I could have given the circumstances.”

Heckman, Johnson and Trujillo teamed up with juniors Andrew Severn and Braden Augustine to take second place in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Heckman, who swam the anchor leg in both races, wished he could’ve finished the last race better, but felt fatigue from earlier races.

“I’m a sprinter. That’s what I like to do,” Heckman said. “Fifty free is like prime yardage, I guess. Anything after that is when I drop off. That’s just how I am.”

Freshman Salvador Good was runner-up in the one-meter diving, freshman Tyler Jones was second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 individual medley, and senior Dylan Bierschbach 100 breaststroke.

For at least one senior — in a group that included Trevor Blackbourn, Brian Camarena, Keifer Smith, Jordan Schoepf, Patrick Steinbach — it didn’t set in that it was his last home meet until afterward.

“Now that you reminded me, I guess it is kind of bittersweet,” Trujillo said.
