Letter to the editor: Another jail?

To the editor:

Another jail is not necessary. The new jail is on K-10. Security ankle bracelets are the answer with parolees having to be checked on by social workers at certain intervals. It’s a lot cheaper and still efficient. Medical marijuana should be legal also. It’s a drug like any other with just a bad reputation because of people who have used it illegally, but it is still necessary for the people who really need it.

After Mrs. Hammers’ death in the local jail, better attention should be focused on the particular needs of the prisoner. The incarcerated have rights, too.

Instead, have colleges or schools that teach technical skills like plumbing, electronics and auto maintenance that keep people from getting into jail in the first place. Not all people have high GPAs to get into universities like KU. Help them get decent jobs.
