Gary Woodland finishes tied for seventh at Sony Open

Former University of Kansas golfer Gary Woodland caught fire Sunday and climbed all the way into a tie-for-seventh-place finish in the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Woodland stood at 2-over par through six holes and started his climb up the leaderboard with a birdie on No. 7, a par 3. He holed out from a green-side bunker for an eagle on No. 9, a par 5, and then carded five birdies and four pars on the back nine to finish the day at 6-under and the tournament at 14-under.

In the first event of the 2018 web.com tour season, the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay, former two-time KU All-American Chris Thompson, a Lawerence resident, had nine holes remaining when play was suspended on the tournament’s second day. At that point, he stood at even par for the day and tournament, right at the projected cut line.

In Saturday’s first round, Thompson carded four birdies, one bogey and a triple bogey 8 on No. 15.
