Volunteer opportunities: Take down holiday decorations downtown

Every year, Just Food helps hang the bows and garlands on the meter posts downtown and receives a donation from Downtown Lawrence Inc. in return. Now that the holidays have come to an end, help is needed to take down the garlands.

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at Einstein Brothers Bagels, 1026 Massachusetts St. Be sure to dress warmly and bring gloves.

Become an advocate

The Sexual Trauma & Abuse Care Center is looking for volunteers to serve as advocates. Advocates work closely with staff to provide direct services to primary and secondary survivors of sexual violence.

Responsibilities include staffing the 24/7 support hotline on a rotating on-call schedule and providing supportive counseling, crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals. Volunteer advocate training will begin Feb. 5.

Museum seeks help

The KU Natural History Museum is home to four floors of public exhibits examining Earth’s history and provides content-rich, hands-on science learning for school groups. The museum is looking for volunteers to assist with events, family activities, tours and other special projects inside and outside of the museum.

Volunteers will assist staff with educational science activities at in-house events and outreach programs, help with event setup and cleanup and lead group tours through the museum.

Photographer needed

The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library supports the Lawrence Public Library’s collections, programs and services through fundraising events.

The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library is looking for a volunteer events photographer to take and edit photos that will be used to market the organization. The photographer will document Friends of the Lawrence Public Library events, programs, volunteer services and activities throughout the year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking a Big Brother for Tyler. Tyler is 13 years old, has three boisterous siblings and is incredibly active. He enjoys sleeping in, playing sports and watching football. Tyler would love to have a Big Brother who could help him navigate this transitional age.
