LHS boys slip on Senior Night against O-South

Lawrence High senior Jake Rajewski (20) slips under a defender for a layup in a matchup against Olathe South on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 at LHS. Olathe South beat Lawrence, 59-49.

Frustration quickly started to mount for the Lawrence High boys basketball team in the fourth quarter of Friday’s 59-49 loss against Olathe South.

After falling behind by as many as 12, the Lions tied the game at 40-all with under five minutes to play.

But the Lions then saw their hopes of winning on Senior Night evaporate after Olathe South went on a 19-9 run to close out the game. Lions players slapped their hands against the LHS walls after a key foul, turnover and a goaltend that resulted in a technical foul in the closing minutes.

They felt the game slipping away.

“We didn’t play very well,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “I thought Olathe South played with a little more sense of urgency and wanted it a little bit more. They were a little bit loose and played with nothing to lose, and that’s kind of a dangerous combination. We were a bit tight and just not quite ourselves.”

Lewis said he was hoping his team would pull away after going on a 9-0 run in the middle of the third and tying the game in the fourth.

“We had a nice stretch there. Tied it at 40, and then we get a foul called on us,” Lewis said. “Then the momentum just shifts again. We just never did get quite over the hump and get that momentum going our way.”

Lewis added that his group on Senior Night wasn’t the same team that was winners of four straight heading into Friday’s game.

“You don’t want them to go out on their Senior Night with a loss,” Lewis said. “But you also have to take ownership in what we could have done better. But we’ve got a good group of seniors and we just have to let this one go and move into next week.”

Anthony Selden, brother of former KU men’s basketball player Wayne Selden Jr., led the senior group — which also consists of Van Dave Jacob, Jake Rajewski and Steven Strickland — with nine points on the night.

He said he walked away from the game knowing his team can play better than it did against the Falcons.

“We can perform a little bit better,” Selden said. “We’ve got to come back stronger next week, when it really matters.”

LHS will now await its seeding in sub-state.

“Tomorrow, we’ll know who our matchup is and then we move into a five-game tournament and see where it goes,” Lewis said. “I liked the way our guys had been playing. I don’t like the way they played tonight, but I’m willing to learn from this one tonight and move on to tomorrow’s practice and get ready for next week.”
