Four city wrestlers, two from Free State and two from Lawrence High, fell just short of earning a spot in Class 6A state championship matches with losses in the semifinals Friday at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Free State junior Elijah Jacobs lost by a 4-3 decision in the semifinals at 145 pounds and senior 195-pounder Elijah Denmark lost by a 14-12 decision. Lawrence High senior Relle Dye (138 pounds) lost by fall and senior Melle Dye (145) lost by a major decision.

The Firebirds had five wrestlers lose in the quarterfinals: Lou Fincher (106), Garrett Bradley (120), Isaiah Jacobs (132), Joey Eddis (160) and Devin Beers (182). Caleb Streeter (113) won a consolation match and Tate Steele did not compete in the tournament because of disciplinary reasons.

Lawrence freshman Logan Farrell won a consolation match at 106 pounds and junior A.J. Powell was eliminated with two losses at 182 pounds.

The state tournament will continue at 9 a.m. today.
