LHS boys pull away from Olathe Northwest, win fourth straight

OLATHE — Things are going good at Lawrence High right now. So good, in fact, the referees have to tell them to stop scoring.

Really.

As Brett Chapple barreled down the court in the waning seconds of LHS’ 65-49 win over Olathe Northwest, he had an uncontested path to the hoop.

“No! No!” one of the referees yelled at Chapple. “Pull it out! Pull it out!”

Chapple had never heard anything like that from a referee before, but he took it all in good fun.

“I was definitely going to dunk it,” he later joked.

That’s the way it’s been for the Lions’ boys basketball team (11-8, 8-4 in league).

With Anthony Selden playing through the flu, he later confirmed, the Lions needed a player or two to step up. There were no shortage of candidates.

“I just feel like everyone had their moments tonight,” said Lions coach Mike Lewis.

The first to fall into that category was Trey Quartlebaum. The junior knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to open the game and then hit one more in the second quarter.

The Ravens went to a box-and-one defense on Quartlebaum, which slowed down the offenses and kept things close. Leading 16-15 midway through the second quarter, Van Dave Jacob (12 points) and Clarence King made layups to push the LHS lead out to five. Chapple scored on two straight possessions to cap off an 8-0 run and push the lead out to 9.

By the end of the game, it’d be a lot bigger.

“Starting to get a few things figured out,” said Lewis with a smile. “If you’re having fun and playing loose and hitting some shots, that’s what it’s all about.”

The next shots came from Zeke Mayo (11 points), who scored six straight LHS points early in the third quarter. Then, King caught fire in the fourth, scoring in a variety of ways to reach his team-high total of 19 points.

The Lions were efficient and decisive with the ball, and it showed in the final totals.

LHS committed two — just two — turnovers for the game.

“I was thinking about that a few times over the last week. I went back and looked at previous years to see what our averages were,” Lewis said. “As a coach, you look, ‘Ah, how do you turn it over 18-19 times?’ So we’re starting to emphasize a few of the details.”

He asked how many turnovers his team had and was told the answer.

“Jeez,” said Lewis. “So, you know, I’ll take it, for sure.”

He wasn’t the only one with such a reaction.

Informed of that same number, Quartlebaum (11 points) grabbed the attention of King, who was walking nearby.

“We only had two turnovers,” Quartlebaum said.

“The whole game?” King asked. “That’s good man! Let’s go!”

But bigger than any one number, Quartlebaum — and the rest of the Lions — were more excited about their current upward trend.

After dropping five straight contests, the team has now won in each of their last four and looks to be headed in the right direction, with only one more regular-season game remaining.

“It feels good, because we stayed mentally tough,” Quartlebaum said. “It feels good to come out with a win tonight.”
