The first community meeting to provide input on the design of the new indoor practice facility for the University of Kansas football team is scheduled for next week.

The Community Advisory Committee is made up of representatives from neighborhoods that border the site of the future facility. They will provide input about some of the facility’s design features to the project’s building committee, according to KU spokeswoman Erinn Barcomb-Peterson. The meeting, scheduled for Feb. 14, is open to the public.

Barcomb-Peterson said the committee would make recommendations about how to address the mutual interests of the community and the university during the project’s design and construction.

In November, the Kansas Board of Regents gave the university authority to build the $26 million indoor practice facility. The stadium is on the northern edge of KU’s campus and is bordered by the Oread and West Hills neighborhoods.

Mike Delaney, who represents the Oread Residents Association on the community advisory committee, said that the main concerns were the visual and traffic impacts that the project will have on the area. He also said the neighborhood was initially concerned that the facility might be built on the northeast side of the stadium, across the street from the HERE apartment building and directly bordering the neighborhood.

That location does not seem likely. Barcomb-Peterson said the location of the facility would most likely be on the west side of the stadium. She also said the project’s timeline was still on track. The timeline anticipates the design development will be completed in March and the facility itself in December.

The community meeting will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the St. Andrews Office Building, 1515 St. Andrews Drive. Barcomb-Peterson said the committee was anticipating three or four such meetings.
