Victoria Mosakowski posts shutout in LHS girls soccer’s tie with Pembroke Hill

Several shots found their way near Lawrence High senior goalkeeper Victoria Mosakowski as she stood her ground in front of the net, but she answered every time.

Mosakowski recorded 12 saves in a shutout effort against Pembroke Hill on Monday at LHS. Her standout performance helped the Lions’ girls soccer team finish in a double-overtime, scoreless tie with the Raiders.

“She was great. I thought this was probably her best game all year,” said LHS coach Matt McCune. “She was challenged from the get-go.”

Pembroke Hill came out aggressive and controlled the pace in the opening minutes of the match. The Raiders kept the pressure on Mosakowski for most of the match, especially the first half.

Pembroke Hill outshot LHS, 4-0, in the first, but Mosakowski made crucial saves in front of the net and kept the Raiders quiet offensively.

McCune said he was also impressed with how Mosakowski got involved with the offense at times and directed some of LHS’ players.

“She had the confidence, where she had been lacking in previous years,” McCune said. “So, I was very pleased with her effort tonight.”

One of Mosakowski’s most notable saves came in the second half, when Pembroke Hill’s Rachel Legg got behind the LHS defense and dribbled the ball near Mosakowski’s goalie box.

As Legg prepared to shoot, Mosakowski stepped in front of Legg and blocked the ball out of bounds with her knees.

Mosakowski said her team’s defense played an important part in helping her record a shutout, but she was glad she was able to make notable saves to keep the scoreless tie intact.

“I feel like we all did pretty well,” Mosakowski said of her team’s performance. “I’m the last line of defense, but I rely on my defense and everyone in front of me. So, I couldn’t have had the shutout without them supporting my back. Especially when I do take those challenges up in the air and out of the net.”

Mosakowski said there’s usually one standout player on an opposing team that the Lions try to keep an eye on offensively, but the Raiders featured a three-player attack.

Pembroke Hill’s Caroline Salzman, Kennedy Wolf and Legg each had three shots on goal, but Mosakowski contained them all offensively.

“I feel like if we adjust as a team, we’re able to stop anything,” Mosakowski said. “If we just think and play as a team, we’re good.”

Offensively for LHS, the Lions (1-6-2) recorded eight shots on goal. Senior Maria Duncan and freshman Hanna Gilmore-Hodge each had two shots in the match.

McCune said his biggest takeaway on the offensive end was the contribution he received from his entire team.

Off the bench, senior Mikayla Downs and freshman Riley Unekis each had the best opportunities to score for the Lions. Downs blasted a header high on goal midway through the second half, but Pembroke Hill goalkeeper Emily Dickey corralled the shot with her hands.

Unekis nearly scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime before a penalty was called on LHS.

“I was very pleased with the bench, the youth that we have,” McCune said. “It was a scrappy game. We knew it was going to be a kind of shoot-from-distance type game. (Pembroke Hill) is very organized. It was energy off the bench (that helped us offensively).”
