LHS girls, FSHS boys take first at Little KU Relays

Erin Cushing was disappointed when she heard the news, but she didn’t let it hurt her results. Instead, she let it fuel them.

Huddled up in her coat and clinging to a warm beverage just off the throwing area outside Lawrence High, the senior recounted the emotion of finding out she didn’t make it to a competitive KU Relays, instead participating in the Lawrence High Invitational, known as the “Little KU Relays,” on Wednesday.

“It’s kind of exciting, kind of bittersweet,” Cushing said. “That was kind of disappointing to find out that I wasn’t in that, and then I knew I could out here and win this today.”

That she did — in impressive fashion.

Battling the cold weather, Cushing took first in the javelin with a throw of 118 feet, 8 inches. That mark was significantly longer than any performer from the event last year and gave her some separation from the rest of the pack.

“Honestly, we got here at about like 1:45. We were the first people here and it was freezing,” Cushing said. “I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m going to PR.’ It’s so cold here and windy. Then I got up there and was like, ‘All right. I can do this.'”

Lawrence High’s Amaya Harris (113-8) came in second with LHS’ Michaela Cordova (95-6) placing third.

Throughout the day, plenty of LHS and FSHS athletes found themselves with career-best or near career-best performances.

LHS’ Van Dave Jacob began his day with a first-place performance in the long jump. Jacob posted a leap of 20-10, edging out Blue Valley’s Shane Bergeman (19-8) and LHS’ Kendrick Hobson (19-0).

Jacob also competed in the triple jump, taking third behind Blue Valley’s Shane Bergeman.

“It’s cold, body’s feeling bad, but just got to stay focused mentally and physically,” Jacob said of his first mark. “(In the triple jump), my legs were dead but I had to keep on pushing.”

Jacob, who joined Bella Kirkwood (200 meters, 28.35; long jump, 15-7.5), Jayden Wilson (800 meters, 2:46.40), Hannah Stewart (1600 meters, 5:41.35), Layne Prescott (3200 meters, 12:52.17), Ella Stewart (discus throw, 105-1) and Bryce Tibke (shot put, 47-4; discus throw, 143-11) as the Lions’ winners of the individual events, said it was a battle to keep warm throughout the day.

Free State's Sun Rolf competes in the pole vault at the Little KU Relays held at Lawrence High.

Prescott, who took first in the girls’ 3200-meter run, agreed, saying the temperature actually made her a little nervous.

“I didn’t do so well earlier in the mile,” Prescott said. “But I started at a faster pace than I normally do and I was like, ‘I’m going to stick with it, because I’m feeling good.'”

Prescott credited the encouragement from her fellow schoolmates as a driving force in her performance and that of the LHS girls, who took first for the competition with a score of 132. The same support was true with the Firebirds, who also had a bit of a secret weapon on their side.

Just outside the throwing area for javelin, several Free State athletes packed into a tent. With music playing, and upwards of a dozen bodies inside, the environment was far friendlier than that of the windy, mid-40s conditions — and it was all thanks to Zach Pitts, who placed sixth in the javelin for the boys with a throw of 144-0.

“That was today, randomly,” Cushing said. “We got Zach to call his mom, and she brought a tent and we set it up real quick.”

“I definitely went to go check that out and got in there,” added Free State’s Nevin Ponds, who ran in both the 100- and 400-meter dashes. “When I was in there it was probably like 20-25 people were in there. Everybody’s all bundled up, trying to stay warm.”

With an assist from the tent, the FSHS boys finished in first with a score of 101.5. Firebirds event winners included Cushing (javelin), Aiden Goertz (800 meters, 2:10.63), Landon Sloan (1600 meters, 4:47.32), Charlie Johnson (3200 meters, 10:14.14), Kaiy King-Wilson (300-meter hurdles, 44.92) and Jack Theisen, who edged out Olathe North’s Josh Besanceney (153-1) and teammate Game DelValle (150-6) to win the boys’ javelin throw with a score of 155-1.

The Free State girls, on the other hand, finished in third with a score of 56.67. The LHS boys (57.17) finished in fourth, losing out to Blue Valley by less than 1.5 points in the final team scores.
