Hutchinson — The renovation of a space museum in Kansas will include four mission control consoles once used by NASA engineers to guide astronauts to the moon.

The Cosmosphere’s $151,500 remodel will also include improvements to the flight room and mission control room, The Hutchinson News reported. New technology and software integrated into the room’s machines will allow a more interactive experience.

The consoles that will be featured in the museum were used by NASA during missions from the 1960s to the early 1990s.

“It gives me goosebumps to think that the same consoles that helped get man to the moon are being used by our campers,” said Tracey Tomme, the Cosmosphere’s chief operations officer. “Maybe one of the first astronauts to go to Mars will find their inspiration through these consoles and their Cosmosphere Camp experience.”

Work on the museum is expected to be completed by April 19, in time for the Cosmosphere’s educational camp for the Barstow School, a private school in Missouri.

The renovation is part of a capital campaign to use fundraised money. Cosmosphere President and CEO Jim Remar said the museum needs to raise another $1.4 million to complete the planned renovations on the educational side.

“It’s going to look spectacular,” Remar said.

Remar hopes have the educational components completed by the end of the fall.
