Free State High’s girls tennis team placed second at the Sunflower League Tournament on Thursday at College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, highlighted by its doubles teams.

Senior Ali Dodd and freshman Keegan VanPelt combined on a runner-up finish in doubles, losing in the championship match to Shawnee Mission East’s Wilcox and Cottrell, 8-5. The Lancers won the team title with 107 points, 16 ahead of the Firebirds — the second straight season FSHS has finished runner-up at league.

Free State junior Gabby Gorman and sophomore Anna Peard were fifth in doubles, posting a 4-1 record with their lone loss in the quarterfinals. In singles, Kate Piper was eighth and Andie Veeder took 10th.

Lawrence High’s girls tennis team was 12th in the team standings, led by freshman Bella Kirkwood, who took 14th in singles.
