Chapple provides lift at receiver in return to football

Lawrence junior Caleb Mondi celebrates with Brett Chapple (10) after Chapple scored in the second quarter of Fridays' game against Shawnee Mission West on Sept. 22, 2017 at Shawnee Mission South District Stadium

At the beginning of the summer, Lawrence High junior Brett Chapple tried to play quarterback, but it wasn’t working as much as the football team hoped.

Once Chapple switched to receiver, it was a different story.

Each time he’s touched the ball this season, it’s been in the end zone. Two catches, two scores.

It’s a nice welcome back to football for Chapple, who is playing football for the first time since the third grade. He will look to continue his success when the Lions play host to Olathe North (1-3) at 7 p.m. today.

“I wasn’t expecting to play right away,” Chapple said. “I knew it was going to take an adjustment. It’s nice starting and helping the team out as much as I can.”

Chapple wanted to play football since middle school, but was overruled by his parents. He suffered a broken thumb in youth football.

Instead, he’s starred on the basketball court. That’s where he was spotted by Lawrence football coach Dirk Wedd, who was one of the coaches who helped Chapple convince his parents to return to the football field.

“He’s just an athlete,” Wedd said. “What I love about him is that he was a sophomore in basketball and he gets 12, 15 rebounds every time you turn around. He competes as hard as anybody on the team and he doesn’t care about points. He’s the most unselfish kid on the basketball team.”

Chapple, listed at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds on the football roster, 6-5 in basketball, said starting summer workouts at quarterback played to his advantage. He knew all of the plays and it helped him learn how to finish routes.

What was the toughest part?

“Probably blocking,” Chapple said. “It looks easy on screen, but then when you actually go out there and do it, they are a lot quicker and it’s harder to get your hands on them.”

Learning all of the ins and outs of receiver, Chapple said teammates Ekow Boye-Doe and Jalen Dudley have been a big help.

Then there’s his advantage of playing basketball at the varsity level. It’s helped him adjust to the speed of varsity football without too much trouble. He’s already played in a Class 6A state title game, so he isn’t afraid of playing in big games.

“He’s smart, he’s got really good hands and he’s tough,” Wedd said. “He’s unselfish. You add all those things, you’re going to be successful in any sport when you have those qualities.”
