Man shot Wednesday night in northern Lawrence; 3 people detained following chase

A shooting in northern Lawrence Wednesday night injured a Lawrence man and led to a multicounty pursuit of a vehicle seen in the area.

Lawrence police responded to a mobile home park in the 100 block of North Michigan Street around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday after numerous callers reported hearing gunshots in the area, Lawrence Police Officer Drew Fennelly said in a news release.

Officers found a 32-year-old Lawrence man with a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound at a mobile home in the area, Fennelly said. A ground ambulance took the man to a Topeka hospital, and he was reported to be in stable condition as of Thursday morning, police said.

Gunfire also struck multiple vehicles and residences at the scene, Fennelly said.

Callers reported seeing people and vehicles fleeing the area after the shooting, and a Lawrence police officer near Sixth and Kentucky streets soon spotted a red vehicle that matched witness descriptions, police said.

As the officer attempted to investigate, the vehicle fled north across the Kansas River bridge and officers pursued it through North Lawrence and then east on U.S. Highway 24 to Leavenworth County. With the help of Leavenworth County deputies, the chase ended near 187th Street and Dempsey Road, about halfway between Tonganoxie and Leavenworth.

Police detained the three people in the car and brought them back to Lawrence for interviews, though no arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon, Fennelly said.
