2nd suspect arrested in connection with fatal Motel 6 shooting; bond set at $1 million

Lawrence Police Department officers remained on the scene Sunday morning of the Motel 6 in North Lawrence the scene of a fatal shooting late Saturday night.

A second man has been charged with first-degree murder and other violent crimes in this month’s deadly shooting at a North Lawrence motel.

On Thursday, Shawn K. Smith, 18, of Kansas City, Mo., appeared — via video from the jail — in Douglas County District Court, where Judge James George set his bond at $1 million.

Smith is charged with one count of first-degree murder for allegedly killing 23-year-old Cameron A. Hooks, of Lenexa, in the commission or attempted commission of a “dangerous felony,” armed robbery, according to the charges, filed Sept. 6 and made public Thursday upon his appearance in court.

Smith also is charged with two counts of aggravated battery for allegedly causing great bodily harm to two other men, and one count of aggravated assault for allegedly threatening a fourth man with a gun, according to the charges.

All four counts are felonies.

Smith was arrested Sept. 15 in Kansas City by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department on a probable cause warrant related to the charges, Lawrence police said in a news release on Thursday. He was booked into the Douglas County jail Wednesday.

Smith told the judge that he already had an attorney he planned to hire to defend him in the murder case.

Prosecutor Andrew Bauch said “there are some co-defendants in this case” and asked the judge to assign Smith’s case to the same courtroom. Smith’s next hearing was scheduled for Sept. 27.

The first suspect arrested in the case was Tyrone J. Carvin, 19, of Kansas City, Kan.

Carvin is charged with the same crimes against the same victims, with one difference: Carvin’s murder charge alleges that Carvin “or another” killed Hooks in the commission of aggravated robbery.

Carvin himself suffered a gunshot wound “in relation to the shooting” and was treated at a Kansas City-area hospital afterward, police previously said. After being booked into the Wyandotte County jail, Carvin was moved to the Douglas County jail Sept. 5.

Lawrence police have declined to release more information about the incident or additional suspects, citing the department’s ongoing investigation.

The killing took place about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 2 inside a guest room at Motel 6, 1130 N. Third St.

Responding officers discovered three shooting victims, Lawrence police said previously. Hooks died from his injuries, and two other victims were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were initially described by police as possibly life-threatening but later downgraded to nonlife-threatening.

The police department asks anyone with information about the incident to contact the department at 832-7509 or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at 843-TIPS (8477).
