Free State golf 12th at Carol Gillard Invitational

The Free State girls golf team earned a 12th-place finish at the Carol Gillard Invitational on Wednesday at Overland Park Golf Course.

The unique 9-hole, junior varsity/varsity-combined tournament featured two golfers from each team playing in a scramble, four-ball or alternate shot format.

The Free State varsity squad was led by Tori Hoopingarner and Claire Covert, who posted a score of 44 in a scramble. Abby Solcher and Jessica Reed highlighted the tournament for the Free State JV team by carding a score of 31 in the scramble on the Par-3 course, which was good for third place.

Lawrence High also competed in the tournament, but did not have a four-ball JV tandem to have a complete team.

Emily Johnson and Beatrice Lopez shot a half-round of 48 in the four-ball to pace the Lions. Haylee Rose and Reece Wohlford finished with a score of 40 in the scramble to lead the Lawrence High JV golfers.
