Volunteer opportunities: United Way seeks marketing assistant

The United Way of Douglas County brings community resources together to support a better life for residents by focusing on improvements in health, education and financial stability. The United Way is seeking a media relations and marketing assistant to play an integral role in public/media relations and content creation for United Way programs.

The desired outcome from the volunteer’s efforts will be planned content designed to creatively, methodically and strategically communicate the message of the United Way. Front desk help

The Lawrence Douglas County Housing Authority works to provide affordable housing and self-sufficiency services for low-income residents of Douglas County. LDCHA is seeking assistance at its front desk with greeting tenants as they come in, monitoring the computer lab, answering phones, watching children while parents use the computer and other clerical and administrative tasks. Compost sale

The City of Lawrence Solid Waste Division needs volunteers to work full days or half-day shifts Sept. 14-16 for the fall Compost & Woodchip Sale Event. A sandwich and water (please bring a refillable bottle) will be provided. The volunteer shift is from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will be held rain or shine, so be prepared to be in the elements for the duration. Volunteers will be interacting with attendees and helping to coordinate traffic. To sign up, email recycling@lawrenceks.org.

Campground cleanup

The Friends of Hidden Valley help maintain and preserve the Hidden Valley camp at Kasold Drive and Bob Billings Parkway. Volunteers are needed for cabin, yard and garden cleanup at Hidden Valley on Sept. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. Suggested work time is about an hour. Special projects are available with advance notification.

Bring work gloves and a water bottle. Tools, first aid and refreshments are provided. Scout troops are welcome to contact the service project coordinator to plan their own service projects. Contact Durand Reiber at 865-4657 or at durandi@sunflower.com for more information.

Be a Big

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. Are you looking to make a difference in the life of a young boy or girl in our community? For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a “Little” the invaluable gift of your friendship.
