Free State High’s volleyball team picked up its first wins of the season Wednesday, beating Shawnee Mission North (25-12, 25-15) and Olathe North (25-20, 25-8) at SM North.

Rachel Hickman, Kaitlyn Hamilton and Cameryn Thomas led the Firebirds in kills.

“What was key to our success was both our middle’s involvement in the game,” coach Keely Hammontree said. “Our setter/middle hitter connection is still a work in progress, but is getting better each game we play. Creating that sense of trust, and setter/hitter relationship, is sometimes a lengthy process, but I am thrilled at our growth in such a short time.”

The Firebirds (2-3) will play in the Lee’s Summit (Mo.) West tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday.
