Report: Beaty one of Power Five’s lowest-paid football coaches

Kansas head coach David Beaty watches a West Virginia score during the first quarter on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017 at Memorial Stadium.

According to USA Today, Kansas head coach David Beaty isn’t the lowest-paid man leading a Power Five football program, but he’s close.

The national publication on Wednesday published a list of FBS coaches salaries, topped by Alabama’s Nick Saban, at $11.1 million a year.

Though contract details were not available for nine head coaches, including four from major conferences, only two FBS coaches on the list — Cal’s Justin Wilcox ($1.6 million) and Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke ($1.16 million) — have deals in place that will pay them this year less than the $1,601,109 due Beaty, who ranks 65th on the list.

Salaries were not available for Miami’s Mark Richt, USC’s Clay Helton, Syracuse’s Dino Babers and Baylor’s Matt Rhule.

The lowest-paid Big 12 coach on the list, Beaty earns roughly $500,000 less than both first-year Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley ($2.12 million) and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell ($2.1 million).

First-year Texas coach Tom Herman ($5.5 million) is the conference’s highest-paid coach.

Shortly after his second season in charge at KU, Beaty signed a contract extension and received a raise that nearly doubled his previous salary of $800,000 a year.

His contract, which runs through the 2021 season, includes a number of incentives and a $3 million buyout.

With five games remaining in his third year at Kansas, Beaty’s record stands at 3-28, with one Big 12 victory.

The Jayhawks are 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12 headed into this week’s Sunflower Showdown at Memorial Stadium versus rival Kansas State (3-4, 1-3).
