LHS volleyball staying at home for sub-state

Lions, Firebirds both earn No. 3 seeds to start postseason

Looking to advance to the Class 6A state tournament for the first time since 2009, Lawrence High’s volleyball team will have to win two more home games.

The Lions (24-11) were seeded third in their sub-state bracket and will play host to No. 6-seed Shawnee Mission East (11-19) around 6 p.m. Saturday at LHS. The winner will play second-seeded SM Northwest (27-10) or seventh-seeded SM North (4-27) for a spot at state on Saturday night.

Free State’s volleyball team (25-14), which made it to the state tournament last year, was seeded third in its own sub-state bracket. The Firebirds will face No. 6-seed Wichita Southeast (13-19) around 3 p.m. Saturday at Wichita Southeast’s south gymnasium.

The winner of Free State-Wichita Southeast will play 10 minutes afterward against No. 2-seed Manhattan (29-9) or No. 7-seed Wichita East (14-22) in the sub-state title game.

In Class 2A, Bishop Seabury’s volleyball team (10-22) was seeded seventh and will open against No. 2-seed Heritage Christian (28-9) around 3 p.m. Saturday at Burlingame in the first round.
