Seabury’s Hedges takes 9th at state golf

Playing through strong winds at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays on Monday, Bishop Seabury sophomore Faith Hedges surged on the back nine and took ninth place at the Class 3-2-1A girls golf state tournament.

Hedges, who won a state title last year, carded a 96. She fired a 41 on the back nine, making par on four holes. On the front nine, where she shot a 55, a few shots bounced out of bounds.

Thomas More Prep junior Shannen Chin shot a 4-over-par 76 to win the tournament, five strokes ahead of second place.

“We are proud of her for hanging in there after a difficult start in heavy wind,” said Bryan Hedges, Faith’s father and coach. “Things didn’t go her way today. We are so proud of her for having a great attitude and rallying for a great finish.”

Hedges tied for ninth with two other golfers, but won the tiebreaker based on back nine scores.

At the Class 6A state tournament at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City, Free State senior Tori Hoopingarner led all city participants in 62nd place with a 106.

Free State sophomores Kennedy Birk and Kate Lawrence tied for 71st, each shooting a 114. Birk shot a 54 on the back nine, making par on a pair of holes.

Lawrence High junior Olivia Wallen carded a 150, placing 88th.

It was Hoopingarner’s third appearance at state, while Birk, Lawrence and Wallen were first-time qualifiers.

Gardner-Edgerton junior Mia Tovkach won the 6A state title, shooting a 72, and Washburn Rural won its second straight team championship with 327 strokes.
