LHS volleyball 2nd at Emporia tournament

Lawrence High’s volleyball team posted a 5-1 record and took runner-up at the Emporia Invitational on Saturday, its best finish in the tournament in more than a decade.

In pool play, the Lions beat Louisburg (25-13, 25-23), Maize (25-17, 25-15), Bonner Springs (25-13, 25-12) and Junction City (25-12, 25-13). They topped Bishop Carroll in the semifinals (21-25, 25-17, 25-21) before losing to Washburn Rural in the title match (25-23, 25-20).

Lawrence (23-11, ranked No. 7 in Class 6A) had four players with at least 25 kills: Baylee Unruh, Michaela Cordova, Katelyn Mask and Sammy Williams. Laura Willoughby had 85 assists and Laurel Bird added 67. Libero Lauren Maceli recorded 72 digs and Unruh had 41.

The Lions will meet Free State in a City Showdown dual at 6 p.m. Tuesday at LHS.
