Dodd, VanPelt take 6th at state tennis in doubles

Playing in the Class 6A girls tennis state tournament for the fourth and final time, Free State senior Ali Dodd teamed with freshman Keegan VanPelt for a sixth-place finish Saturday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Complex.

Dodd and VanPelt won a pair of matches, including one against teammates Gabby Gorman and Anna Peard, before losing their last match to Lucky Kendall and Larkin McLiney, of Shawnee Mission East. Their performance propelled the Firebirds to fifth in the team standings, the program’s highest placing since 2002.

Gorman and Peard won their final match, picking up a victory over Olathe North’s Mallory Brown/Kristen Knipp to take 11th place. The duo finished didn’t advance to the second day of the state tournament last year.

Dodd and VanPelt ended the season with a 33-5 record, while Gorman and Peard posted a 27-12 record.
