FSHS doubles teams advance to second day of state tourney

Free State senior Ali Dodd and freshman Keegan VanPelt suffered a loss in the Class 6A state tournament quarterfinals Friday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Complex.

Dodd and VanPelt, competing in doubles, had a first-round bye and won their first match against Evan Bail/Hannah Thurlby, of Blue Valley Northwest. They will compete for fifth place during the second day of the state tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. today.

Junior Gabby Gorman and sophomore Anna Peard posted a 2-1 record after losing their first match to a doubles team from Blue Valley West. They will play for ninth place today.

In singles, junior Kate Piper posted a 1-2 record, earning a first-round win over Taryn Tabor, of Garden City. Her second loss eliminated her from the tournament.
