Health Care Access announces date for half marathon and 5K

Runners of the 2016 Kansas Half Marathon/5K run down Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence. There were more than 1,500 runners who participated last year, representing 32 states and the District of Columbia.

Health Care Access, a local nonprofit that works to bring community-based health care services to low-income individuals, has announced its 10th annual Kansas Half Marathon/5K.

The event, created to raise funds for its mission of providing health care to those in Douglas County with limited financial means, will take place Sunday, Nov. 5 at Watson Park, 727 Kentucky St., according to a news release. The half marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 7:45 a.m.

Jennifer Stucker, race director, said in the release that the race route — which takes runners through downtown Lawrence, then east before heading over the Kansas River Bridge and through North Lawrence — no longer includes the levee. She said runners last year reported that the levee was a key issue, and thus has been eliminated from the route this year.
