Letter to the editor: Unique stadium

To the editor:

The KU Raise the Chant campaign includes some worthwhile projects, such as indoor practice facilities and a new volleyball arena. These improvements are badly needed, and the renderings look great. They complement the recent improvements to Allen Fieldhouse, which is among the most historic arenas in college basketball.

On the other side of campus, Memorial Stadium is a historic venue it its own right. It has the distinction of being the oldest college football stadium still in use west of the Mississippi River. Unlike so many modern venues, it retains its classic layout and provides a timeless view of the hill that is cherished by many Jayhawks. Most of the seats have a great view of the action on the field.

The stadium is in desperate need of repair and expansion, but perhaps KU should consider a renovation that will maintain its notable and traditional attributes. For example, lowering the field, adding a second level to the bowl, and building suites on the east side would all increase capacity without destroying the best aspects of Memorial Stadium.

The latest proposal simply provides a smaller version of every other cookie-cutter modern stadium across the country. Under these new renderings, Memorial Stadium loses all sense of uniqueness and place.

KU is steeped in traditions and in history. The university should play to its strength and retain its classic venues. Memorial Stadium, just like Allen Fieldhouse, deserves an expansion that maintains, not destroys, its historic integrity.
