Seabury boys win season opener over St. Mary’s

Senior Thomas diZerega scored 25 points and Bishop Seabury’s boys basketball team opened the season with a 53-44 victory over St. Mary’s on Thursday at Seabury.

DiZerega drilled a trio of 3-pointers and had 14 points by halftime. Luke Hornberger added 11 points, handing first-year coach Jonathan Raney his first win with the Seahawks.

“Thomas carried us for stretches offensively and found a way to get us a bucket or get to the line when we needed it,” Raney said. “I thought Luke was fantastic on the glass and on the defensive end with his effort and length.

“St Mary’s was a very good and experienced team so it was a good challenge for us and good opening win to build upon.”

The Seahawks (1-0) will face Shawnee Mission East at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the eight-team Championship Showdown at SM East.
