Wedd honored at Simone Awards; 4 city players named to All-Simone team

Lawrence High School football coach Dirk Wedd talks to his team prior to a summer football practice Wednesday at LHS. Wedd will be retiring as football coach at the end of the 2017 season.

Recently retired Lawrence High football coach Dirk Wedd was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Simone Awards on Tuesday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Wedd, who graduated from LHS, was the program’s head coach for 19 seasons, accumulating a 104-87 record.

“When you surround yourself with great kids that play hard,” Wedd said during the award ceremony Tuesday. “They love playing for Lawrence High and they know what the tradition is. It’s fun to go to work every day.”

Several city players were honored on the 2017 All-Simone team, which recognizes the top players in the Kansas City metro area: Lawrence senior quarterback Dante Jackson, Free State junior running back Jax Dineen, Free State senior defensive lineman Spencer Roe and Lawrence senior defensive back Ekow Boye-Doe.
