Firebirds 1st, Lions 2nd in season-opening swim meet

Free State swimmer John Loos competes during the Boys 200-yard freestyle event of the Free State Quadrangular on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 at Free State High School.

A few minutes after the final event of Wednesday’s season-opening swimming quadrangular at the Indoor Aquatic Center, Free State senior Adam Ziegler said he was unsure of the team scores.

That didn’t stop him from swimming some of the fastest times in his life, leading the Firebirds to first place in their home meet. Ziegler won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.06 seconds and was second in the 50 freestyle.

In the team standings, Free State held off a challenge from runner-up Lawrence High, 380-357.

“That’s exciting,” Ziegler said. “I’m hoping to drop a lot more time throughout the season.”

Ziegler swam the first leg in Free State’s first-place 200 freestyle relay, helping set the tone for teammates Dean Stuart, Jake Viscomi and Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck in a state-qualifying time of 1:36.20.

Sirimongkhon-Dyck won in the 100 breaststroke and Ziegler added that he was impressed by Brady Flynn’s times in his first swim meet — eighth place in the 50 freestyle, seventh in the 100 freestyle.

Sophomore John Loos, working his way into swimming shape after running cross country, was second in the 200 freestyle. It was the first time he swam that race in high school.

“I think it’s the right distance,” Loos said. “I haven’t really swam it before … and I really enjoyed it. It felt great.”

Lawrence High senior Stephen Johnson won the 100 butterfly in 54.77 seconds, surprising himself with a personal-best time. He has his eyes set on trying to break the school record in the event, but didn’t think he’d start the season so well.

Johnson added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley and swam in the winning 400 freestyle relay alongside Alex Heckman, Treyton Trujillo and Tyler Jones. Heckman was first in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Jones won the 200 freestyle.

“We’re going times that put us in a pretty good place, especially compared to last year,” Johnson said. “Even though we lost a whole bunch of seniors, it looks like we’re fit to be better than last year.”

After leading the Lions in several meets throughout the last few seasons, Heckman said he was happy with his start because he hasn’t practiced much in the last four months.

Entering his senior season of swimming, Heckman said it’s finally hit him that it’s his last year.

“I’ve got through my entire senior year without feeling like one until I got back to high school swimming,” Heckman said. “It’s like the one time where I feel like a senior because people look up to me.”
