Van Go’s annual art show and sale is ‘Out of This World’

Artists Colby Easum and Ashlyn Hemmerling prepare objects that will be on sale during the 2017 Van Go Adornment Show and Sale, beginning Saturday, Nov. 25. The theme of this year's show is Out

From dinosaurs to space aliens, young apprentice artists in Lawrence will celebrate the past, the future and everything “Out of This World” at the 2017 Van Go Adornment Art Show and Sale, which begins Saturday evening, Nov. 25.

The annual show is the primary fundraising event for Van Go, an organization that provides arts-based job training to under-served youth in the Lawrence area.

Eliza Darmon, development director at Van Go, said the show will feature work from all of the young artists in the program. But the organization also hired three local professional artists to work with the students: Alicia Kelly, an instructor at the Lawrence Arts Center who works primarily in printmaking and cut-paper installations; Colin Ledbetter, who works in both fiber art and digital media; and Hannah Sroor, a 2016 graduate of the University of Kansas who specializes in abstract expressionism painting.

Van Go is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

According to the story on its website, the program began in 1997 with a borrowed van, a $2,000 grant from the Kansas Arts Commission and 10 young kids from East Heights and New York elementary schools in Lawrence.

It has since grown into a nationally recognized arts-based social service agency that provides job training for at-risk youths, age 14 to 24, in Douglas County.

This year’s adornment event begins with a reception with the artists at 6:45 p.m. at the Van Go headquarters, 715 New Jersey St., followed by the public sale that begins at 7 p.m.

The sale continues throughout December. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
